Survivor feedback is so important to us, not only does it help us improve our services but it helps other survivors understand what they might gain from support if they are thinking of giving us a call to refer into our services. Our prevention team met with a @servicesforyoungpeople.pkc boys group this week and looked at The Man Box. We explored how boys and men are told they should and shouldn't behave, and the effect that has on us and our emotional wellbeing. We will be revisiting this topic with the group again later in the term. May 1st is Beltane, or ‘bright fire’. This old Scottish and pagan holiday marks the beginning of summer and is one of four major festivals in the ancient Gaelic calendar. It is still celebrated in many communities in Scotland. Beltane is associated with growth, vitality and new life. It’s a time of hope, a time for breaking old patterns that no longer serve us and starting anew. This May Day, here are the RASAC team’s top five tips for healthy habits to explore... 1 Be the friend you need. It’s easy to complement the people we love, but how often do we notice positive changes in ourselves? Higher self-esteem is linked to greater resilience and life satisfaction -each day, notice one thing you appreciate about you. 2 Move for your mood. Physical activity isn’t just taking care of your body, it can also help your mood. Doing just 15 minutes of intentional exercise per day could help you feel happier this summer. 3 Start a gratitude list. Feeling grateful can benefit our health in even help us live longer, but how can we practice it? Before you go to bed, think over your day and write a list of any time someone brought a positive into your day, no matter how small. Did a barista ask how your day was going? Add it to the list. 4 Accept the grey. Humans prefer thinking in black and white, but in reality most situations are not completely good or completely bad. Next time things don’t go as expected, ask yourself – is this situation black and white, or is this in the grey? And if I am in the grey, can I be kinder to myself about it? People who are able to practice self-compassion experience less stress than those who are overly self-critical. 5 Done is better than perfect. Comparison is the thief of joy, and it’s easy to strive for perfection if you fall into the trap of believing someone’s Instagram life is representative of everyday life.
