What to know more about Endometriosis... 👉Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women in the UK. It occurs when cells similar to those lining the uterus are found elsewhere in the body, which can lead to pain, inflammation and scar tissue. Endometriosis is not an infection and it’s not contagious. 👉What are the symptoms? Experiences of endometriosis vary from person to person, but common symptoms include: - Painful, heavy periods that affect your everyday life - Pelvic pain - Pain during or after sex - Pain when you go to the toilet - Difficulty getting pregnant - Tiredness 👉Endometriosis and childhood abuse A number of research studies have found a link between pelvic pain and experiences of childhood sexual abuse. One 2018 study found that survivors of ‘severe to chronic’ childhood physical or sexual abuse had a 79% higher risk of developing endometriosis compared to women who had not experienced abuse. We don’t yet know why there is a link between childhood abuse and developing some gynaecological conditions, but one thing that is clear is the impact of sexual abuse on survivors when accessing healthcare. A UK study found that women who had experienced sexual violence were less likely to attend cervical screening, with less than half attending cervical screening in the last five years compared to nearly 80% of women who had not experienced sexual violence. 👉What now?
